Bubble tea shop opens inside a comic book store in downtown Plymouth

A lot has gone well for the Ashkar family and their bubble tea business. One of the latest successes came when the family arrived in downtown Plymouth.

After opening Z’s Bubble Tea in Dearborn Heights in 2019, they saw enough business to warrant a second store. Having previously lived in Canton Township, they started looking for space last summer in nearby Plymouth. After seeing the space currently occupied by Detroit Barber Co., they walked into the nearby State of Comics to ask if they knew anything about the space next door.

“He was like, ‘Well I have this place in front of my store and I don’t know what to do with it,” said Zeinab Ashkar, store owner with her husband, Fadi, and namesake of the store. “So, literally, we found a space in January. We were open on April 19.”

The bubble tea shop operates out front of the comic book shop at 575 Forest and serves most of the drinks you would expect. Drinks include fruit tea, milk tea, and boba coffee, as well as iced tea and more. Some foods, such as mochi ice cream and macaroons are also available.

Ashkar said she has fully embraced the location in front of State of Comics, with artwork on the walls of the space with comic book panels celebrating all things bubble tea.

“We decided to go ahead and match the space,” she said.

The seals on the bubble teacup even featured signs that looked like comic books, as a result of what was shipped to them from Taiwan.

The store specializes in making each drink to order, Ashkar said. The tea is brewed and the tapioca is brewed every few hours, keeping everything as fresh as possible. The most popular drink in the Plymouth Shop is a taro coconut mixed with tapioca.

“It’s really, really good,” she said. “We actually serve it in ice cream now. “

The boutique is open from noon to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday; noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Online ordering is also available.

Adding the store to the front space of State of Comics, said President and CEO Ryan Hetkowski, was a great choice that he hopes will bring new life to this part of downtown. city of Plymouth.

“It has relieved some pressure to fill a space that we have not currently used and that will continue to attract new customers to our building,” he said in an email. “Our hope is with State of Comics, Z’s Bubble Tea, Detroit Barber Shop and Barrio, all lined up on Forest Avenue, that the four of us can truly revive Forest Avenue and make it ‘the place to be’ for them. years to come. with exciting entertainment, food and drink. “

The Bubble Tea Shop has become a popular place for younger people, a growing trend in drinks in recent years. It is not uncommon to see teenagers come with their computers and sit at the cafe, Ashkar said.

She said a lot of people who know their store in Dearborn Heights head to Plymouth to check out the new space. When customers find out it’s located outside a comic book store, they’re even more excited, Ashkar said.

“We have a lot of people who love comics and bubble tea,” she said. “We complement each other.”
