Burglars hit the Lacey comic bookstore known for food donations and charity work

Over $ 8,000 in Pokémon cards, Yu-Gi-Oh cards, and collectibles has been stolen from Gabi’s Olympic Cards and Comics, which distributes free food to those in need.

LACEY, Wash. – A Lacey comic book and map store known for handing out free food to those in need has been hit by a burglar who fled with thousands of dollars in merchandise.

Gabi Shephard likes to think about her store, Gabi’s Olympic cards and comics, as more than just a business.

“It’s a community meeting place,” Shephard said. “Once you enter you are one of my children.”

But early in the morning of Saturday, October 2, someone broke into his shop and stole more than $ 8,000 worth of Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh cards as well as miniature painting equipment and supplies.

“My first feeling when I walked in was just absolute betrayal,” Shephard said. “Like, how could anyone do that?”

Shephard was relieved after watching surveillance footage of the three potential burglars and not seeing anyone she recognized. She was concerned that these were repeat customers or members of the homeless community that she and her charity, Gabi’s children have been helping for 15 years.

Anyone can come to their store and collect a bag of food, free of charge, thanks to donations. “It’s just a gift of love from the community,” Shephard said, “to help others.”

Shephard is grateful that none of her employees were injured.

“I’m trying really hard to see the positive side,” Shephard said, “I hope these people were desperate and in need of food.”

Although sympathetic, Shephard wants the police to hold the burglars accountable.

Lacey Police want anyone who knows anything about the crime to call (360) 704-2740 or Crimestoppers at 800-222-TIPS and reference case # 2021-4212.
