Company Shop Dudley, on Castle Mill, Birmingham New Road, was officially opened by Councilor David Stanley this morning.
The store will carry big brand foods and products at discounted prices.
Key workers, school and board employees, and families on benefits can become store members. Membership is free and open to almost all key workers. The company has also extended membership to people on means-tested benefits, including families with children receiving free school meals.
Company Shop works on the basis of avoiding waste by taking surplus food and merchandise from other stores and selling them for half the price on average.
None of the foods have passed their expiration date, and the company says there are many reasons products become surplus, including overstocking, incorrect or “false” labeling and seasonal packaging.
Councilor Stanley said: “I was delighted to be able to attend the official opening of Company Shop, a fantastic supermarket that will be a much appreciated addition to our borough.
“I believe about 8,000 people have already registered to become members. Innovative stores like this have become even more prominent with people struggling with the pandemic, and it will benefit many people in the borough.
“I encourage eligible people – including our own staff – to sign up and view the great offers.”
