The co-op announced on April 26 that it would build a 25,000 square foot grocery store.

“COVID-19 may have taught us new ways of doing business, but it has also highlighted the need to modernize,” said Terry Tremblay, CEO of Prairie North.

“The existing grocery store has served our members for 45 years from its current location. This new construction will ensure that customers of Prairie North Co-op grocery stores in Melfort and surrounding areas will be able to access our excellent Co-op products in a new grocery store that will allow us to take advantage of new technological advancements in the field. food industry.

The existing Co-op grocery store is located in a mall across town.

The decision was welcomed by city officials.

“Prairie North Coop’s announcement is exciting news for our city and everyone living in the region. Residents across Northeastern Saskatchewan need access to services and supplies, ”said Mayor Glenn George.

The new location is much busier in a region that is experiencing a lot of development.

“Saskatchewan Drive is the busiest traffic location in the city with more daily vehicle movements than many high traffic locations in major cities across the province,” said Brent Lutz, director of development and planning for the town of Melfort. “With the additional traffic generated by the development of a new grocery store, we anticipate increased interest in the development of the adjacent Stone Gate Mall. “

The new grocery store will be accessible via Route 6 at the traffic lights near the McDonalds.

Site preparation is expected to begin in spring 2021 and construction is scheduled for next fall and winter.

“If all goes well, we plan to be open for Christmas 2022,” Tremblay said. “The new construction will play a key role in helping us achieve our vision of being the trusted first choice in our community, and for that, I would like to personally thank the Prairie North Co-op Board of Directors for their leadership. and his foresight. . “
