Owosso woman opens downtown clothing store for affordability

OWOSSO, Mich. (WJRT) – When you first walk into Kaizen 113 on Washington Street in downtown Owosso, you’ll notice children’s clothing and lots of them.

Most of the clothes are second-hand and cost $ 19.95 or less.

And there is a reason for this.

Just ask store owner Shantelle Goodman.

“I had known poverty once I became a mom myself, so it was important for me to give the same kind of kindness and help that I received growing up here with some members of the community. “said Goodman.

It’s no secret that the past year and a half has been a battle. She’s only been in business for about three weeks.

She saved her pennies by looking closely at the stores around her.

“We lost JCPenney during the pandemic, we lost Goodwill during the pandemic, we lost Blossom – a children’s store that was here downtown,” she said.

But that wasn’t going to deter her from her vision of making sure people have an affordable place to shop for children’s clothing.

So how does it keep its prices so low?

“I buy them at the price as low as I can make them. I don’t mind losing on certain things if that means someone is going to be warm for the winter, ”she said.

But her store isn’t just about her and her story. She also has two children, one aged 12 and one aged 8.

And what they share with her only motivates her to help others.

“There are classmates in their class who are growing up like me and I can’t pretend I don’t see these kids sitting next to my kids.”

Kaizen 113 is located at 113 Washington St. in downtown Owosso.
