Rapper Gunna is working to make a difference in her childhood neighborhood by opening a one-of-a-kind grocery store.
The rapper teamed up with Goodr to open a grocery store and pop-up clothing store called Gunna’s Drip Closet and Goodr Grocery Store. The store is located in his former college in Atlanta and provides students and their families with free shoes, clothing, food, toiletries, and other essentials.
Gunna attended Ronald E. McNair Middle School in the Fulton area with her four brothers as a child. The school is located in a community where many children live in poverty.
11 Alive said the store will benefit 900 students and their families for years to come. The store will be restocked every week and families will also be able to search online for the items their child needs, which will allow them to get a ticket for the school bus ride.
“It just makes me feel like I’m doing what needs to be done for my community,” Gunna shared.
Before the ribbon cutting, Gunna received her own day. Mayor of South Fulton, Georgia William “Bill” Edwards announced “Gunna Kitchens Day” with an official declaration proclamation as a way to honor her accomplishments.
“Much like the Phoenix, rising above the ashes of adversity, Gunna is committed to giving back to the community that raised him, protected him, protected him and supported him by creating Gunna’s Drip Closet and Goodr Grocery Store, which is expected to provide students at McNair Middle School with access to free meals, clothing and toiletries for years to come, ”it reads.
Jasmine crowe, CEO of Goodr, an Atlanta-based company aims to solve the hunger crisis, shared the impact the store will have on the residents of South Fulton.
“He provides a way of life for these families and that’s something legendary,” Crowe said. “I don’t think anything like this has been done before in the city of Atlanta.”
Goodr fights food waste and food insecurity by organize pop-up grocery stores that help people in need buy fresh produce and basic necessities.
“We believe that hunger is not a problem of scarcity. It’s a question of logistics, ”says the company. “Goodr provides a secure ledger that tracks an organization’s food surplus from collection to donation, providing real-time social and environmental impact reporting analyzes. The Goodr model aims to provide a triple winning solution by improving an organization’s bottom line through charitable tax donations, reducing its greenhouse gas emissions from landfills, and channeling its surpluses to edible food to local communities in need.
