Renfrewshire MSP urges key workers to register at discount food store

Natalie Don MSP supports a store that provides key employees in Renfrewshire with food and household items at great prices, while helping the environment.

The MSP of Renfrewshire North and West enjoyed a tour of Company Shop Renfrew, in Blythswood Retail Park, with Gemma Edlin, Retail Manager for The Company Shop Group.

Company Shop is a redistribution supermarket avoiding the waste of good food and household products.

With heavily discounted products that are on average about 50 percent below normal retail price, Company Shop Renfrew is helping stretch family budgets, while tackling the challenge of surplus food and product waste.

The store is part of the UK’s leading surplus redistribution organization, Company Shop Group, which works with all major UK retailers, manufacturers and brands to redistribute surplus food and household products including Ocado, Morrisons, Marks and Spencer, Nestlé, Greencore, Iceland and Tesco.

All products sold in the store are up to date but are considered “surplus” and could otherwise be wasted.

Membership is free and open to almost all key workers, including those working in the NHS, social services, emergency services, the fast-paced consumer goods supply chain, the armed forces and prison services, and temporarily to those working in schools and councils.

In order to reach the most disadvantaged families, the branch has also extended its membership to beneficiaries of means-tested allowances.

Mrs. Don aid: “I was delighted to visit Company Shop Renfrew and learn about the store’s progress over the 20 months since its launch – including its employment of 42 employees and its rapidly expanding customer base of over 48,000 locally registered members, making it the largest local business in Scotland.

“It was great to hear that membership was temporarily extended during the Covid-19 pandemic to people employed by nurseries, schools, colleges, universities, local authorities and housing associations as well as to people on means-tested allowances, so that they can also access reduced-cost food that would otherwise be wasted.

“I encourage people in Renfrewshire North and West who are eligible to become members to sign up and start enjoying the opportunity to purchase cheaper food items that are all up to date but have been overstocked elsewhere or become excess simply due to incorrect labeling or seasonal packaging. “

Gemma added, “We were very happy to welcome Natalie and show her all the great work that has taken place since the store opened, benefiting local families and helping to tackle surpluses in the area. . We look forward to continuing to work with Natalie to support those in Renfrewshire and beyond. “
